WAJIR IS THE GATEWAY OF TOURISM  ATTRACTION
Beyond the irony, misconception, stereotyped illustrations painted by many Kenyans Wajir is a land of opportunities with full of hope .
Wajir County is found in the North eastern part of Kenya. The county takes up a land area of 55,840.6 square kilometres; with almost one million population making it one of the largest Counties by land area in Kenya.
Wajir Town is the capital town of the County. The Somalia Republic lies to the East of Wajir County, Mandera County to the North-East, Ethiopia Republic to the North, Marsabit County to the North-West, Isiolo County to the West and South-West and Garissa County to the south.
Many Kenyans believe this region as a less potential production or contribute to National Growth profit (GDP) ,one ask himself or herself what can this barren, remote region with scorching sun has to offer ? can this region be a tourist attraction destination? For decades people had bad misconceptions against Wajir believing if one pay visit he/she will encounter a rugged and rundown town, with hostile people or kinda of primitive.
Thanks to devolution, Wajir, one of the oldest hamlets in northern Kenya, is expanding rapidly into a model desert town.
With many domestic investors storming ,the expansion of the County will mesmerize whoever explore this sunbaked region. Since devolution flex it's legs Wajir opened it's doors with opportunities everywhere. The construction of tarmac ease the transportation and easy movement- the "TukTuk" hugely brought more advantage it eased the means of transport and created as sort of employment to hundreds youth unlike years back when the town was so sandy ,the booming of business, from hotels, lodges Wajir is on the rise.
With major breakthrough made in many sectors, sphere of life Wajir people are hardworking, so friendly, enrich culture, with most amazing unique lifestyle leaves one into Happy mode ,the Somali food - for century Wajir people live harmony, united and show humane.
Its a region known to be peacemaking ,this gave Wajir an exemplary. The uniqueness of way of life symbolizes a region of stability.
Wajir Town, the home of Northern Kenya’s first museum, was established by the British in 1912 as their colonial headquarters.
There is long history of Wajir century ago, this place early eighties it was so bushy little was it explored -Almost all corners of Wajir there is a mark of history left, far forty eight kilometers Griftu was known "Sariftu" the colonial wells still exist, an open land in Griftu its called "Beer Jiiin" (the Land of Satan),most the Names is one of the century monuments,
Because of that, the town is rich in historical, natural and cultural heritage, most of it preserved by the museum whose exhibition theme is “A Window to Northern Kenya”.
Wajir Museum was officially opened in April 2011, a year to the town’s centennial anniversary.
The museum has documented and preserved Wajir’s historical sites and monuments, including Wagalla massacre site 1984, Yahut dam, Shaletey wells, old buildings, Italian war bunkers and Orahey wells.
The town’s oldest buildings, including the one that houses the museum, were constructed by Italian prisoners of war .Also house the County’s paediatric centre, emergency response unit, deputy county commissioner’s offices, the police station and the meteorological department.
On decades past the colonial wells are deeply entrenched in the town’s history because that is where pastoralists used to converge. This is where also barter trade was transact -families exchange information of all kind.
Different clans and communities used to congregate in areas around Wajir Town to water and graze their animals. Hundred years on almost every homestead in Wajir Town has a well due to the high water table.
Orahey wells, the oldest in the region, are a short distance from the town center are in use. mostly for
Water tracking especially on drought seasons .Elders say they were responsible for the growth of the town.
Those memories, our forefather almost pass on ,the narration remain fresh. Too unfortunate they we're not recognized as independent fighters for the Nation- they took part in MauMau.
Today town you see a very significant for tourist attraction; World War II bunkers connected by underground tunnels. The Italian army used the bunkers as it sought to prevent the area from falling into the hands of the British and Commonwealth forces in the 1940s.
Trenches and bunkers can be seen from ,Wajir High area, within town,Orahey wells and the health department offices and Catholic area.
Undoubtedly Wajir county has many things, sceneries that can attract tourist. From our unique Somali culture,museum- One can learn the history and traditions of Northern Kenyan communities at the museum.
Besides its historical heritage, Wajir is a town full of wildlife. Giraffes, ostriches, gazelles, birds and other animals roam freely in the outskirts.

Different types of trees covering our land, birds also available, of which very species in Kenya.
There lots need to be done both govt to aid this sector of tourism either financially, manpower at least we gain our County Growth profit up ,despite the county government formed a department, that is just a skeleton it must put More concern, especially constructing public recreational areas, government resorts for visitors to comfortably sunbathe and many other attraction ways.
The National Government with in conjunction with county Wajir Game reserve be renovated, upgraded into higher level.
Further we residents can participate in enhancing tourism for example the rich tycoons to establish a private beach, resorts center all in all it's possible our County, Wajir to be  the ultimate choice foreign tourists to destined if all possible mechanism is in place.
Tourism sector can heavenly empower;Create employment and growth of the economy. Globally tourism sector come first in Country's. Source of revenue. Despite Wajir weather not friendly tourism can do better.
