If no intervention fastracked things will escalate as the droughts
ravages parts of Wajir County- leaders should wake up
As the heatwaves continues hitting
the brunt of the alarming droughts is gradually felts in Wajir especially the pastroralist
who are immensely affected whose main dependency are livestock with temperature
exceeding forty Celsius. The normal live has been derailed- the land is bare
and expansive, multiple whirlwinds sweeping across every now and then,
with shortage of water is felt across the six constituencies, unknown outbreaks
of diseases reported in West of Wajir, Athibohol, livestock dying masses in
Aragne which believed to be livestock diseases, weakness of livestock,
human-wildlife conflicts, malnutrition among children and pregnant mothers-
this may cause serious diseases .The school learning has been affected as the
heatwaves causing disruption across- schools in the outskirts are facing inadequate
of water and well nutrients balanced food are on the brink of maybe closed if
the situation worsen.
Masses of evidently emaciated
livestock hurdling to quench their thirst around water points, after hours-long
treks in search of the same. Women will wait patiently in line to fill their
jerry cans to take back home or further to wait the rare commodities for days. Some
are pregnant women.
Despite the early warning raised by the
National Disaster Management Authority(NDMA) raise an alarm on incoming
droughts in some parts of the Nation still no much knowledge of the common
residents of Wajir have a clue. Families have been sunk into increasing
vulnerability. Men are struggling to provide for their families, their faces
are sad and strained as they stare into the unknown future, while the eyes of
women and children dart about in hope their leaders will facilitate and a plan for
them, whenever they partake on the local radio shows.
In the recent fire-outbreaks has
massively engulfed huge portion of the pasture that will have helped the pastroralist
The awaited long rain seasons wasn’t available. Little downpour experienced as
they hoped for better hence no sensible farming activities go on- with those who
are trying hard in engaging farming they have little support, no permanent
water solutions, if this ongoing ravaging drought is not mitigated this will dearly
rob the community of its livestock that serve as a sign of heritage and source
of food.
Women are very vulnerable to this (high temperature) they are backbone of the
society whose role are never doubted, they face some huge setbacks in ensuring
family dignity are restored, from health perspectives many women are in limbo
in getting servicing delivery why? they are not close to the hospitals (vicinity
of the health resource) they tend to suffer in silent - during the pregnancy either loosing of the baby, miscarriage or
even she may bleed to death such cases happened – whether negligence of the
medics or as result of lack of blood or in generally the social fabric – that
is no much care at the family level . Women are much affected in drought season.
In 2017 fifteen women died in Wajir as result of maternal complications in the
Nationwide 857 cases reported.
With alarming of the droughts in the
County something must be done to mitigate or bring a sanity to this situation if
not the matter will escalate- from educational peril, lives lost, massive death
of livestock, inter-conflict due to survival of the living, worsen of climate
change, economical degrade and further more human- wildlife conflicts.
How this can be tackled? The area
leaders should come with robust plan to intercept this ongoing problems- water-
tracking be fastracked to all the six constituencies, in conjunction other stakeholders
Ngos, National Government and well- wishers food distributions be catered for
all vulnerable in the society.
To invest on long plan on food
security and provision of health services, the chunk of money used in other
misplaced priority be channeled toward such projects so that people to benefit.
To combat against climate change,
with all mechanisms be addressed in dealing with global warming, to strengthen in
conservation of the environment, bringing a better policy in curbing charcoal business
that must intertwined with a bigger investment in empowering youths and women
so that the society is free from poverty, inequalities and injustices – give full socioeconomic setup.
To harmonize a platform to educate pastroralists
on investment – herders be guided in utilization the resources in hand (livestock)
- that is the pastroralist to engage alternative income sourcing to boost their
live whenever a catastrophe happens.
Together with non-state organs
leaders should give hand to a sustainable program to empower the people of Wajir,
initiative that will automatically bring opportunities.
Constitutionally each Kenyan has
right to a better life so we appeal to our esteemed leaders to execute their responsibilities,
to fulfil the pledges they promised during the campaign trail, they should holly
follow the law – with no discrimination, divide rule, tribal orientation,
sideline politics, to work for peace, unity and tranquility- To achieve the Four
Agenda of our president it’s upon all of us to work in hand in ensuring a
better life for our generation.
